Going Green

This post is a reply to what Nandini ji pondered over. I found this quite interesting to take up. My Green list and not-so-Green list. I gave a good thought about this and finalized on these!

Green List

* littering - a big NO. i used to litter big time in my childhood (for an year or so). One day Ms. Sumathi, our English teacher (seventh standard) spoke about being clean and keeping our surroundings neat. From the very day, I stopped littering on roads and observed the difference I made to my surroundings. I thank my teacher for guiding me in this!
* water - i do not use much water while cooking, use paper instead to clean. i use all my clothes over 2 weeks and wash them at once. so, i save significant amount of water avoiding daily washing. however, i make sure i stay hygienic.
* i walk long and short distances. these days i do not have a personal vehicle, i use public transport instead.
* i reduced using plastic significantly, i refuse taking plastic bags given by the vendor. however, i'm yet to bring that down to zero.
* i use low wattage bulbs in the house. power bills came down!
* as far as plastic cups for coffee, tea - i'm not used to those till date so i'm not contributing to the waste.
* i contribute my idle laptop time to world community grid. this helps their research to a great extent. Most of internet users leave their desktops idle for some time and this adds to a great extent. The amount of computers/laptop idle time can be used for scientific research. Contribute now!

Not-so-Green list

* recycling - even though I contribute to the paper recycling, i haven't contributed to the aluminum recycling.
* i used to wrap gifts in plastic. but not anymore as i stopped giving gifts :)) helping the needy instead.
* i should use paper more effectively.
* at times I doze off without switching the lights off. Yesterday night, after reading Nandini ji's post on green list, I slept reading a novel. Suddenly, I remembered the post and switched the lights off. Speak of enlightenment, I'm at it!! ;) I should stop wasting energy hereafter.

i have this interesting experience from my childhood to share with everyone. I hope readers can appreciate it. I along with my brother used to play cricket in the ground till sun sets and as light fades away we started our way back home. The interesting part was, whenever we observed people throwing cigarettes without butting the flame, we lit the flame off. Gradually, this became a daily routine. I'm impressed with the way we carried this out back then. However, I do not see people behaving like that these days. Sensible junta!

This new year, I hope to decrease my not-so green list and of course maintain the green list. Let us hope that this new year brings a moral, social conscience along with happiness and prosperity to all people!

The Last week of Vacation..!!!!

Well the climate growing very colder... its good to for the eyes to see everything in white ...snow ...but once we step out of the door ..Oh my God... its FREEZING...

SACHIN.... You did it again..!!!!

A day after Sehwag set up the tone for an amazing ending, Sachin Tendulkar came up with a spirited century to guide India to a famous victory. I haven't seen Sachin get as ecstatic as he got yesterday scoring the winning runs for the country. I was filled with a sense of joy, satisfaction and euphoria. Sachin never had anything to prove to the people but this achievement reveals his passion to game (when his contemporary struggled to reach double digit score) and his meticulous execution of team plan. His game was very contrasting to that of Sehwag's. Each player role was well defined and i believe the roles of dhoni and kirsten are equally important. Sachin played with ease with the support of VVS and Yuvraj. I doubted Yuvraj's selection to test team but he silenced his critics with his balanced knock of 85. He kept runs flowing at the other end whenever there was a lull.

At 35, the master ran as if he were a teenager. In a rare display of emotions, Sachin pumped his fist in air out of joy after winning the match. His passion for game continues even after 18 long years. The big daddy of Indian cricket has scored 41st test century and has given the country a reason to smile after recent Bombay terror attacks. England team deserves a pat for their professionalism and supporting our country in these trying times. Kevin Peterson could not help much but watch Indian batsmen snatch away the match. Chennai witnessed in what might not be a greatest test match but surely a great match and which has given Indians a reason to smile again. Every Indian cricket fan must have loved the way England responded to the challenge of terror attacks.

No 2 Across the Globe..!! Congratulations TEJESH...!!!!

It is not that easy to stand first in class when there are at least 50 people. It is not easy to be the topper in the school when it has around 5000 students. But wen it comes to a competition around the globe...!!! Yes am toking about a competition around the world.. ..!!! Mind blowing right..!!! And these all dint bother this brave guy..!!!

Tejesh has stood apart as a separate breed, A breed which emerges as one of its kind...!!! A breed which doe snot do different things but does things differently..!! He proved that success is not the one which comes to you rather success is the one which you go to ac hive.

I congratulate Tejesh for standing SECOND in Sun Micro Systems Certifications across the Globe... This is a moment of pride for all the Indian community.

Congratulations dude for this awesome achievement. Keep this up and we would look forward for much more great news...!!!

First Snow..!! Yeah it was the experience of most of the students who joined UIS for this fall08...!! People are excited when they saw first snow at almost 7 am in the morning..!!! It was awesome to see everything white...!!! By everything I mean GREEN grass no more GREEN ...!!!! Black Roads to be WHITE...!!! And BROWN apartments now are WHITE apartments..!!! Yes the perfect meaning of as WHITE as SNOW is Understood today..!!!!!!

Failure of all forms makes life disgusting for a naive, expert or a seasoned human. Success is just few steps away from our door. It takes that extra step towards the next door to board the success bus. Any ordinary key doesn't open the door for success. It takes a hand of hard work to mellow the knob of the S-door.

Sometimes, we falter right at the S-door not knowing that we are just a knock away. Life is so unforgiving that you will take hell lot of time to realize that you've lost your job in just a matter of few seconds. The other day, my friend mentioned how he met an American who studied under a Bengali professor and has been to Kolkata once some years ago. The American asked if my friend was an Indian and when he replied in affirmative and wondered how he managed to identify. The American replied saying,

'you wear slippers even in winter season, I've observed the same in Kolkata. Are Indians so poor?'

I was in conversation with a co-employee at work and I said I came from Hyderabad ('city of IT and Hi-Tech City' ... really?). And then he asked what exists in Hyderabad? Is it a town? Or is it a village? What do you have there? I said its a big city with many MNCs (software companies including Microsoft). He was clearly surprised by that and said 'that's interesting'.

After all the economic boom, India Shining campaign, Incredible India campaign, international conferences still the wrong image of India as a poor, starving country exists among foreigners. Although, we can brush aside the entire episode by saying that 'those foreigners do not have enough current affairs knowledge' rather than accepting that a lot needs to be worked on developing the identity of India.

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different, that their voices could be that difference.

It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states.

We are, and always will be, the United States of America.

It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.

A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious call from Senator McCain.

Senator McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even longer and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.

I congratulate him; I congratulate Governor Palin for all that they've achieved. And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead.

I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart, and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton ... and rode with on the train home to Delaware, the vice president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.

It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and $20 to the cause.

It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy ... who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep.

It drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the millions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for the people has not perished from the Earth.

There's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to build, and threats to meet, alliances to repair.

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.

And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of the world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand.

To those _ to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security: We support you. And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright: Tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.

This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one that's on my mind tonight's about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons _ because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in America _ the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.

At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.

When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can.

AUDIENCE: Yes we can.

OBAMA: When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.

Halloween did not become a holiday in the United States until the 19th century, where lingering Puritan tradition restricted the observance of many holidays. American almanacs of the late 18th and early 19th centuries do not include Halloween in their lists of holidays. The transatlantic migration of nearly two million Irish following the Irish Potato Famine (1845–1849) finally brought the holiday to the United States. Scottish emigration, primarily to Canada before 1870 and to the United States thereafter, brought the Scottish version of the holiday to each country. The main event for children of modern Halloween in the United States and Canada is trick-or-treating, in which children disguise themselves in costumes and go door to door in their neighborhoods, ringing each doorbell and yelling "Trick or treat!" to solicit a gift of candy or similar items.

Scottish-American and Irish-American societies held dinners and balls that celebrated their heritages, with perhaps a recitation of Robert Burns' poem "Halloween" or a telling of Irish legends, much as Columbus Day celebrations were more about Italian-American heritage than Columbus per se. Home parties centred on children's activities, such as apple bobbing, and various divination games often concerning future romance. Not surprisingly, pranks and mischief were common as well.

At the turn of the 20th century, Halloween had turned into a night of vandalism, with destruction of property and cruelty to animals and people. Around 1912, the Boy Scouts, Boys Clubs, and other neighborhood organizations came together to encourage a safe celebration that would end the destruction that had become so common on this night. "There lived a DEMON who was worrying people for long time, then came this GOD who went and killed that DEMON" according to a Mythology and it is on that day that this DIWALI is celebrated in INDIA. On this day people decorate there houses with lights which indicates that this is a festival of lights and also people fire crackers and fireworks in happiness. They distribute sweets to each other.

Here in UIS too ISA celebrated DIWALI night. There was a visit to the temple and it was like a get together of Indian Students...!!!

Yes, you heard it right!!! Man, am I too psychic or what??!! I was just discussing with a few friends of mine about the end of the current domain name addressing system in the internet and that the guys behind it wouldn't just be sitting idly waiting for a crisis!!!! And just as I thought, here's the solution.... No more .com and .net!!

ICANN(Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has announced the biggest expansion to internet in FORTY YEARS!!! All credit to their team of analysts who have suggested that it is possible to implement new names, broadening the spectrum of our current domain names. ICANN says the bidding for the new names will start in the second quarter of 2009. So, if you have any plans for yourself, keep looking out for the announcement by ICANN.

The CEO of ICANN, Dr.Paul Twomey said, and I quote, "The Board today accepted a recommendation from its global stakeholders that it is possible to implement many new names to the Internet, paving the way for an expansion of domain name choice and opportunity"

So, don't be shocked when you hear of a .GOD or .GOOGLE. That's the next big thing...

Dollar Dreams..!!!!!!!!!!!

The incidents that took place at Walmart... today
The first one between a mother and her child. With cookies, bread and cake yet to be billed, the mother was at the billing counter arranging all the items that were billed. The mother then asked the lady in the counter to inform if it crosses 75$. Incidentally the bill was over 75$ with the above items to be billed. Soon, mother said: 'sorry buddy, next time'. The young lad started crying for his cakes and cookies. It was a grim reminder to me that money drives our emotions, motives and goals of our lives.

The second incident involved an old man dressed up neatly with a costly wrist-watch, bags of cokes and chips and few garments. He was walking beside me as I was waiting for the bus. He was sipping his juice and in a moment he collapsed to the ground. His watch tottering in pain, stuttering to make the next move broke into two. The cigar in his hand put off as he fell against hard concrete. It took about 5 seconds for me to realize that he was not on his feet and needs help. Few of us rushed towards him and called up local ambulance for help. I had to leave the place five minutes later as the bus arrived. This incident scared me like hell as I was unable to figure out why was there a man with all comforts (at least, I thought so) unaccompanied. The incident reminded me that 'to hell with your dollars, I'm screwed'.

Getting FRESH and FRIENDLY..!!!

Thank You so much, on the first hand to the ISO for hosting such an awesome welcome party..!! And as expected and undoubted it was a great hit..!!! Students had a never ending fun (for 4 hrs) with...food and music..!!!

It all started with a welcome video which described all the events that ISO has been organizing for the past couple of years..!! And it was very hard to end with the disco..!!

I know You guys would not be any more interested to read but to watch...

When Silence rules Conversations...!!!!

Relationships with an individual deserves everything. It seeks an entire life.

I was recently at airport, Hyderabad biding farewell to my friends,
as I was leaving for my higher studies. All were escatic about my
departure, about new dreams, about foreign bound.I lost
in my thoughts. All the people surrounded me in hope of last
minute farewell, in hope of the final talk. As I was busy arranging
the luggage, people recollected the best times they've had over the
years, thanked me, gave away gifts, cards, remembrances, hugs,
kisses.

Last 15 mins

As the flight departure time closed in, in fact when it was 6:45 pm
of 11th August 2008, all he said was "its last 15
mins now". Little did I realize that I would get lost in our memories.
Flashes of different places where we spent our childhood ran through
my mind in a split second. Times when we teased other guys were not
far behind as i recollected our first meeting 8 years back. I broke
down before him when I was few hours away from my maiden flight. I
could not stop drops of joy, drops of being alone, drops of being far
away, drops of expectations, drops of responsibilities, drops of
spending time without him for next few years running down my cheeks.
We spoke nothing for the next few mins. Silence ruled our
conversation. It was a moment that shall remain with me for rest of my
life.
I knew we would talk on phone, a few days later but never will the
time come when he pats on shoulder 'emayyindi bey'!!!!!.

It sucks to be all alone without your friend with whom you've spent a great part of life
and just living life on the memories.....

it big and how many of us reach the destination? Why, not all of us

Yesterday night i watched ' a wednesday' movie and was spellbound by heer honesty. I woke up to the thoughts of blasts at hyderabad, mumbai and delhi. And was browsing news and happened to learn about another blasts in Delhi few hours back. I'm taken aback about the reports coming in about the blasts and the group has claimed responsibility for their act and informed news agencies 5 minutes before the blasts.

The movie speaks about how a common man reacts and what happens if a common man is provoked in dire circumstances. Its a battle of a common man against terrorism and laws that process criminals in India. Naseeruddin Shah excelled in the role of a common man with a uncommon mission. However, its the director's vision that sees us through the movie.

In past, blasts were confined to Jammu and Kashmir but for the past three years, urban cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Bangalore were targeted. It can be observed clearly that cities with communal background are involved in the blasts and it doesn't take a genius to identify that all the blasts aimed to disrupt the Indian economy and information technology hubs. The list of blasts in past few years under congress regime is as follows:

Den on 19th you have Orientation which is a must thing you attend. Make sure you don't miss it.

You would have Immunization on 20th of AUG from morning till the evening.

Without dem our coming to university wd be of great mess...!! thanks for their drive from chicago to springfeild.. AND for the lovely INDIAN food after the food in airINDIA.... for any queries all ways feel free to contact any senior available near you..they really good and d help u in all da ways possible....

And...yesterday we jus had a walk in the campus.and jus tried to know some things... in the first place..

3. Open up a bank account.. However on the orientation day the bank wd come to senior and make u open the account...\

As sed by most of the SENIORS at UIS.... getting insurance done at UIS is the best option available...

It could cost you around 250-270$ at the University....

And if U do it from here i.e. from any insurance company in INDIA... Its almost cosying u the same and U need to do a lot of paper work there anta...So its advised to go for insurance at the university itself....

Lets find the best deal available... So lets all try to purchase dollar at the same place if only one of purchases its just around 2000-3000$ but if some 7 to 8 of us can do it at a same time probably we could get a cheaper one... Wat Say GUYS..?

And about the DD as far as I knw ALLAHABAD BANK is giving at cheaper price...

And amount to be carried is 10000-11000 $

8000-8500$ in the form of DD

and 2000$ for ur expenses...(as sed by seniors)

Regarding the exchange rate am TRYING(nt sure) for 42 RS PER DOLLAR.... If any of U can get it cheaper than that we will alldo it there...

All the best for ur shopping first. Here are some things which I wish to let U know before U go on wid the HERCULES task..coz.. picking a few in millions available is a graet deal..isin't it...

Guys.!!! No Pink..!!!!!

Yes guys watsoever it is.. n o even a pink line on ur wear.. Coz..hmmm anthe pink vadante vaddu... plz understand...and orange kuda try avoiding it...

And one more important thing(this is for everyone)...dont also forget to buy a pair or two pairs of thermal wear.. its available at hyderabad central...its a bit costly in da usa..!! coz the temperature at our place is around -22 in december.. so cooool kada..!!

And get monkey caps,muflers,leather jackets if possible...

Hmm.. guys dont buy too much of t-shirts.. the t-shirts dat we buy here are almost wd b out-dated fashion.. get as many shirts as possible.. coz t-shirts wd b cheaper and goodlooking in da usa...

Dnt spend much on shopping unless u have trucks full of money..!!!

After all we shd land at some place and dat place is Springfeild for time being..!! So frnds... hw many of u guys are flying for the first time?? atleeast outside ur own country.. Iam actually..!!
